DRAW Collective is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. This milestone marks eight decades of building relationships, providing high-quality work and most importantly – designing places that matter, together.
From humble beginnings founded in 1945 by Norman B. Kuhn and C. Edgar Newcomer, the company grew into Valentour English Bodnar & Howell, respectfully known as VEBH Architects and then as DRAW Collective. The DRAW 80th anniversary logo leans forward to the next 80 years of growing new talent and partnerships and pushing the boundaries of architectural excellence.

DRAW has consistently focused on projects for College & Universities, Hospitals & Healthcare organizations, K-12 Education and a variety of Community entities. These projects are challenging and passion-filled for DRAW staff and clients. From operating rooms to innovative higher education space and newly constructed K-12 schools, the firm approaches each project with confidence, expertise, and empathy. Throughout the decades, DRAW has worked on projects in the western Pennsylvania region and beyond. From significant projects at the University of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Health Network to Waynesburg University and Trinity Area School District, all projects are meaningful experiences that have helped build DRAW’s foundational history.
In 2022, the firm advanced its growth trajectory by rebranding as DRAW Collective, moving to a signature that represents the talented team and its collaborative approach to project design. Soon after, DRAW merged with long-time educational design firm of Eckles Architecture (originally founded in 1898). According to DRAW President Daniel Engen, “The merger created exciting opportunities for us to serve clients in the region and expand our reach. Joining forces with Eckles was a natural cultural fit. It allowed us to strengthen our team with professionals who share our passion for growth, continuous learning, and engagement in the community.”

United by DRAW Collective’s core values – people and relationships, quality design, life-long learning, and empathetic culture, these past eight decades represent the firm’s growth and commitment to its clients and communities through the power of design.
Now with two local Pennsylvania offices, DRAW looks to the future and the next eight decades of architectural success. “As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, we honor the legacy built by those who came before us and the trust our clients have placed in us throughout the years. This milestone is not just a reflection of our past, but a launching point for our future. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together, and I look forward to the continued innovation, growth, and impact we will create in the years ahead.” said Daniel Engen.
