Hillview Elementary School
Immersive Makerspace
The “Grove City 2040” study and subsequent Pennsylvania Department of Education-formatted District-Wide Facility Study are being used to execute current projects and plan for the future of the District. A recently completed comprehensive renovation/addition project at Hillview Elementary School allowed the District to consolidate grades K-5 into an updated, state-of-the-art facility focused on a project-based STEAM educational program. Additions and alterations to Hillview Elementary transformed the building into a 21st-century learning environment for the early learners.
With a focus on project-based learning, STEAM labs were created for the K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 grade levels to support development as students mature. The design was extremely theme-driven, allowing every component of the building to serve as a learning tool. Often overlooked spaces, such as under staircases, were designed for small-group instruction. The Large Group Instruction room serves as a flexible space that can be used as an open area or a learning/performing space when the bleachers are pulled out.
To further emphasize STEM, exposed ductwork, piping, and infrastructure provide colorful experiences throughout the facility. The project was designed with community input developed through multiple charrette exercises.
Hillview Elementary School was awarded the 2022 “People’s Choice Award” given by the AIA Pittsburgh.
