New Science Building

PennWest University - California

DRAW Collective is collaborating with PennWest California University on the construction of a new state-of-the-art science building, prominently located at the campus entrance. This new facility will replace two outdated buildings and will feature advanced laboratories for biology, chemistry, and physics. During the planning phase, great emphasis was placed on designing these laboratories to be highly flexible, accommodating a wide variety of class types and sizes. Additionally, given its location, the new building was designed to harmonize with the historic architecture of the main campus buildings.

Every aspect of the design process prioritized flexibility to accommodate multiple courses and class sizes within each lab space. This was achieved by meticulously selecting which fixed elements to incorporate and determining the services necessary to support a broad spectrum of learning activities. Whenever possible, movable seating and furniture were utilized, with fixed services strategically placed along the room’s perimeter. This approach significantly enhances the building’s functionality and supports the evolution of teaching methodologies over time.

A primary objective of this project is to “put science on display” and create a showcase for science education, which can be highlighted on tours for prospective students. The demolition of the existing science building will enhance this opportunity by positioning the new facility as a central feature on the prominent front lawn at the campus entrance. The building’s design capitalizes on this by incorporating key elements from the historic campus architecture into its massing and façade, ensuring a cohesive fit. Upon entering, the main lobby blends with the historic aesthetic while incorporating modern elements and providing views into active science laboratories. This approach not only integrates the building seamlessly into the campus landscape but also offers an inviting interior that prominently features its scientific function.

By creating highly flexible lab spaces and a campus showpiece that complements the historic campus front lawn, DRAW has designed a facility that will meet the needs of PennWest California for decades to come. As the project transitions to construction, DRAW will continue to support the University in realizing this vision.
